Study Abroad Opportunities in German Students can choose from a wide array of study abroad programs in various German and Austrian cities. Duke offers two of the best study-abroad programs available: the summer program in the picturesque university town of Erlangen, and the fall and/or spring semester program in what is today one of the most exciting and cosmopolitan cities in Europe -- Berlin. Both programs have been very popular, and drawn rave reviews from students who have attended. Students acquire advanced language skills, deepen their understanding of German history and culture, and broaden their grasp of social sciences and art history in a German and European context. They live with carefully selected German families, have many excursions and opportunities for travel, and above all gain a different perspective on the world and on world events which is invaluable for their future lives and careers. Musicians with the Wind Symphony have the opportunity to spend a semester in the Austrian capital, Vienna. The Duke-in-Berlin Fall Semester program takes place at the Humbolt University from the beginning of September to the middle of December. Students are eligible after one year or more of college-level German or the equivalent. The Spring-Summer Semester program takes place at the Free University from the end of January through mid July. Students who have had the equivalent of two years or more of college-level German are eligible for this program. Costs are equivalent to those of a semester at Duke, financial aid and scholarships are also available. The Duke-in-Erlangen summer program is a six-week, two course program in German language and culture, for which students are eligible after one year or more of college-level German or the equivalent. More advanced students may stay longer and take regular courses at the University of Erlangen during its summer semester. If you are a member of the Wind Symphony, you may wish to participate in the Spring Semester Duke-in-Vienna program. |
