Duke in Vienna
Duke University Wind Symphony Vienna Program
January 11 - April 30, 1999
Come study and make music in one of the
world's most culturally rich cities with one of this country's noted
college wind ensembles: Vienna, the crossroads of central Europe, home
of Mozart, Beethoven, Freud, Schoenberg, Klimt, Hundertwasser and many
other major historical figures.
During the spring semester of 1999, a wind
ensemble from the Duke Wind Symphony under the direction of Mr. Kraig
Williams will depart for a semester of study abroad and concertizing.
The courses will focus on the cultural richness of Vienna - study art
and architecture by touring museums and major buildings, study political
science with the head of the Austrian Conservative Party, study opera
in the opera house as well as in the classroom. Our plans are to depart
from Atlanta on January 11, flying to Vienna, our "home base"
for classes. We'll have weekend concerts tours and sightseeing trips
to Salzburg, Graz, Budapest, a ski weekend in the Austrian Alps, a week-long
concert tour to Malta, and an optional trip to Italy, including Venice,
Rome, Florence, Pisa, Verona, and San Gimigniano. A special highlight
will be a chance to attend the world-famous Hofburg Ball.
Students on the program will enroll in
4.5 courses chosen from the following: German language (at various levels
- required); ARH 100 Art and Architecture in Vienna; HST 100O History
of Austria, MUS 101 Wind Symphony and MUS 106 Chamber Music (required);
MUS 165 Opera in Vienna; and PS 100J Austrian Politics.
The program in Vienna has been carried
out seven times previously with great success. Students are eligible
for the program if they meet Duke requirements for study abroad, if
they are qualified performers of a wind or percussion instrument or
string bass or if they can contribute as a music librarian, equipment
manager or in other ways. Further information and applications are available
from the Office of Foreign Academic Programs, and from the Department
of Music (contact information below). Applications are due to Kraig
Williams in the Department of Music by October 1, 1998. As space in
this program will be limited to 50 participants, interested students
are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
The cost for this program will be $14,600.
The price includes: tuition, room, full board, transatlantic transportation
for instruments, as well as transport within Europe, transatlantic airfare
(Atlanta-Vienna-Atlanta), and all gratuities and fees for group travel.
Duke University welcomes applicants from
accredited colleges and universities. All applicants will be considered
without regard to race, color, national and ethnic origin, handicap,
sexual orientation or preference, gender or age.
