INTERMEDIATE GERMAN II: Contemporary
Germany
(Sample Syllabus)
Required Texts: Kaleidoskop (5th Ed.). Moeller, Adolph,
Mabee, Liedloff; Houghton Mifflin, 1998.
Biedermann
und die Brandstifter. Max Frisch; Suhrkamp Verlag, 1973.
Recommended Texts: Kaleidoskop Übungsbuch.
German-English Dictionary (e.g., Harper Collins
or Langenscheidt)
Course Content: This is the second semester of the two-semester
Intermediate German course (65-66), designed to build upon the knowledge
and skills you have already gained through the successful completion of
two semesters of college level German or the equivalent. Emphasis will
be placed upon further development of the four skills (reading, listening,
speaking, and writing), as well as a comprehensive review of German grammar,
and expanding your insights into the cultural aspects of the German-speaking
world. The basic textbook Kaleidoskop will provide the thematic
and grammatical framework of the course, which will integrate a number
of other texts from a variety of genres and media. In the final weeks
of German 66, you will be reading (and partially performing) an entire
play by the contemporary Swiss author Max Frisch.
Class Participation: The class meets three hours per week,
on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Because acquiring a second language
requires constant, regular practice, attendance is mandatory and
will count for a significant portion of your grade. Should you have to
miss a class due to illness or any other legitimate reason, please inform
me via office phone or email before class, and follow up with a Dean’s
Excuse. Make-up tests are possible only in the case of a written
Dean’s Excuse. More than two unexcused absences will result in a lower
grade.
Homework: Making significant gains in your language proficiency
will require that you put in a good deal of time outside of class. Homework
assignments will consist of reading texts and listening exercises, preparing
grammar, watching videos/films, as well as regular written assignments,
including communication through email. Since we only meet three hours
per week, preparation before class is essential to ensure that no time
is wasted in the instructional hour. Therefore, homework assignments must
be completed on time. Late homework will not be accepted, except with
a Dean’s Excuse.
The listening comprehension exercises in the Übungsbuch,
as well as the extra video and audio assignments, can be completed in
the Language Lab (you may also be able to make copies of the cassette
tapes for home use; check with Language Lab staff). Please inform yourself
of the operating hours of the Language Lab.
Also in the Language Lab are computers equipped with several programs
for reviewing German grammar (see icons under "Language Applications").
You are encouraged to avail yourself of these, especially if you require
extra practice.
Course Syllabus: You will be receiving a detailed outline
of what will be done in class, as well as your homework assignments, revised
periodically to allow flexibility in structuring the course according
to your needs and interests.
Essays and Exams: There will be periodic written tests
(approximately one every two to three weeks), as announced. Quizzes may
be unannounced.
There will also be periodic major essays (1-2 pp.) throughout the semester
(marked "Aufsatz" on your syllabus). These will be graded on
terms of content (integration of vocabulary; organization, and presentation
of topic) and grammatical accuracy. Each "Aufsatz" will be submitted
twice, allowing a second opportunity to improve your work and correct
grammar/structural errors. You should see each essay as an opportunity
to review the content/grammar material, and to use it in effective written
communication.
You are expected to strictly adhere to the Duke Undergraduate Honor
Code. You are expected to neither give nor receive aid in the completion
of exams, quizzes, or any work prepared
outside of class that is to be submitted for a grade. It is especially
important that you not get help from someone else when writing compositions,
unless otherwise directed by your instructor.
Oral / Email Presentations: You will also give several
oral and/or email presentations (based on your essays or other topics)
to the class. Also, a final skit relating to the Max Frisch play will
be prepared and presented on the last day of class.
Final Grade: Your final grade for the course will be determined
as follows:
Class Participation (attendance & attitude, quizzes, preparation
& involvement) and Homework 30%
Tests 25%
Essays 25%
Oral Presentations 10%
Final Performance 10%
Please feel free to ask for extra help or for materials for extra practice!
It is essential that you let us know if you are having problems, feel
overwhelmed, or underchallenged. It is better to deal with these situations
early in the semester, rather than waiting until it may be too late.
Remember, the more you immerse yourself in the language, the more you
will be able to just "pick it up" naturally. There are a number
of opportunities to do this -- browse through the Internet on Germany
and things German (click on "German Links" from the German Language Program
Website at http://aaswebsv.aas.duke.edu/languages/german/index.html),
watch German news on Scola in the Language Lab, read the German magazines
and newspapers in the Current Periodicals section of Perkins Library (u.a.,
Focus, Stern, Spiegel, FAZ, taz), or visit the Stammtisch and
speak German with other students over dinner. Join the German Club and
Delta Phi Alpha (German Honors Society), and/or participate in the many
events they sponsor. This kind of extra-curricular activity is sure to
improve your German, not to mention your grade!

* Read and study. Assignment must be prepared in
order to expedite review during class. You may wish to write out or make
notes on assigned exercises. It is expected that you can work with the
grammar points covered in the grammar chapters. Please address any
questions regarding grammar structures and/or exercises, otherwise it
will be assumed that it is understood. (Test items are likely to be
taken from these exercises; so it behooves you to prepare them as assigned.
Feel free to turn them in if you wish feedback from your instructor. Another
idea is to prepare these exercises in study-groups, so that you can help
each other. Studies have shown that students who do homework in pairs
or in groups perform better than those who work alone.)
