How do I get there?

Some possible combinations for completing the Foreign Language Requirement in Portuguese:

A. No prior knowledge of Portuguese (or no more than 2 years in high school):

FIRST COURSE
SECOND COURSE
THIRD COURSE
1st half Elementary
(Portuguese 1)
2nd half Elementary
(Portuguese 2)
Intermediate
(Portuguese 63)

B. Some previous study of Portuguese or another Romance Language (Students who intend to start at this level of study should schedule a placement interview with the instructor of the course or with the Program Coordinator):

FIRST COURSE
SECOND COURSE
THIRD COURSE
Portuguese as Second Romance Language
(Portuguese 53)
Intermediate
(Portuguese 63)
Advanced Colloquial
(Portuguese 108) or Contemporary Lusophone Issues (Portuguese 111S)

C. Prior intermediate to advanced language skills in Portuguese:

Contemporary Lusophone Issues (Portuguese 111S) and above (one course completes the languages requirement).

For Duke University sponsored programs see the Study Abroad Website. For equivalency credit for Portuguese language, Brazilian and Lusophone literature and culture courses, please consult with coordinator of Portuguese program.

Note: To fulfill the FL requirement, courses taken abroad must be taken in a Duke-administered or Duke-approved program.
